A great way for tamariki to learn Aotearoa’s rich history and connect with their whenua.

This activity is inspired by the All Right? Whānau Effect card: Ōtautahi – Explore Our Heritage.

Choose one of these options, or try both!

• Explore a local place which is historically significant and learn about it as a class.
• Ask tamariki to select a place that’s important for them or their whānau in Aotearoa and ask them to research a piece of this place’s history and to share this either as a written story, a collage or poster, a play, or a short video.

• Te Ara - go to Sections, then Places so tamariki can find the area they’re connected to.
• New Zealand History

Bring in a local kaumatua to talk about the local history – and/or ask tamariki if a member of their whānau who has lived in the local area for a long time might be willing to come in and talk about their childhood and some of the changes they’ve seen.
